When a puppy leaves its mother, littermates, or trainer (if it has gone through imprint training), it can experience stress and uncertainty. Adjusting to a new home takes time, and during this transition your puppy may bark in the crate at night, have accidents in the house, nip at ankles, jump, or even hump (a very common behavior as the puppy works to bond with its new family and find its place in the pack). Your puppy may also pester your other dog or disrupt your family’s routine. Are you prepared and committed to helping your new puppy adjust, establish a routine, and feel secure in its new home?*

We temperament test all of our puppies at 7 weeks of age and use those results, along with our daily observations, to match each puppy with the lifestyle of its future family. Over the years, we’ve had an extremely high success rate in pairing clients with their ideal companion. From birth, we carefully watch how each puppy interacts with its mother, littermates, people, and the environment. At 7 weeks, we also take each puppy out individually and run a series of tests to see how they respond without the support of their litter. Using these scores and observations, we do our best to select the puppy that fits your needs, based on the information you provide in your adoption form. That said, puppies continue to grow and change as they mature. For example, a puppy that appears submissive in the litter may take on a more dominant role in a household if the family doesn’t provide clear leadership, just as the mother or littermates naturally would. Every dog pack needs a leader, and if the owners don’t take on that role, the puppy may try to fill it. When a puppy not naturally suited for leadership is forced into that position, it can lead to stress, uncertainty, or anxiety. Similarly, a confident puppy at 7 weeks may become timid if not properly socialized in the critical first 16–20 weeks of life. Consistent exposure to people, sounds, and new environments is essential to helping your puppy grow into a well-adjusted adult dog. With this in mind, we ask: if your puppy’s personality evolves differently than what you initially envisioned, how would you respond?*
