Step 1
In step 1 I will lure my dog onto the place mat and feed the dog when they get on it. I feed the dog directly to the mouth and by placing food onto the mat as I walk around the boundary both clockwise and counterclockwise. No commands or duration marker is used here. If the dog sat or laid down and I said yes he may think he has to hold that position. I want to get the idea across to my dog that as long as he stays on the mat he will be fed. My goal in this step is to create value in being on the place mat. Just after I’m done feeding its important to use my terminal marker “OK” releasing my dog to 1 piece of food before the dog gest off themself. Make sure the ratio of the food while being on the mat is greater than the food after the terminal mark, or your dog may stick to you rather than going onto the place mat. Repeat this process until the dog jumps onto the mat as soon as you begin walking.
